I have always loved sewing. My Mum taught me when I was 8 on a hand worked sewing machine. Once I got my Brother NS55 I started out making children’s clothes and moved into Vintage clothing but I have always been an Outlander fan so in the last 5 years I have been increasing my knowledge of how to sew historical costumes. I created the ladies shift first, the pockets, the bum roll, the hardest learning curve was the the corset. The Skirt came next and finally the top. I moved on to the Men’s shirt, then the waistcoat and finally the men’s fall breeches. My advice is to do plenty of research, ask for help on social media when you get stuck and never give up! Every mistake is learning how to do it the correct way. I do mock ups first to ensure pattern fit is correct before I cut the final fabric. I recently bought a Brother Sewing and Embroidery Machine as well so I could try my hand at embroidering. As yet I am still learning on Curtains and small items before I tackle clothing. Some items are challenging on my sewing machine and would love a Long arm more industrial machine to cope with the thicker fabrics but my Brother machine has been excellent.
